Polar Bear Ride for Courage

Chum loaded up the 747 and flew Der Jan and Big Red to Our House, office of Cancer Services for Forsyth County, to ride the ‘hunerd k’ Polar Bear Metric.

Chum, Jan, and Red rode in memory of our good friend, Tom Chewning who died of cancer on October 1, 2007.

The ride began with 40 degree temps and calm air — or was that a tailwind? Basically those were the high points. At about mile 20 we turned uphill and into the headwind. After the rest stop at mile 40ish, we passed a flock of turkey buzzards which was more of an omen in light of how bad I felt for the last 20 miles.

We finished in under 4 hours — how the mighty have fallen. Yet, all things considering, not a bad start to 2008.

I pastor Grace Presbyterian Church in Kernersville, North Carolina which locals fondly refer to as K-vegas -- the town not the church. As D.T. Niles once said, "I am not important except to God."
