I am the husband of one and the father of three. I am as St. Paul referred to himself, a “bond-servant of Christ” which means there is a good bit of life that is not any of my business. I pastor Grace Presbyterian Church in Kernersville, North Carolina which locals fondly refer to as K-vegas — the town not the church.
This blog’s title owes its naming to one of my favorite of C.S. Lewis books’, The Great Divorce. (How could you only have one favorite?) In the book’s Introduction, Lewis reminds us of the need to unwind the disenchanting spell of the Disenchanter; he quotes a line from Milton’s masque, “Comus” as being the word on how that unwinding takes place: “with backward mutters of dissevering power“.
“Enchantments” are songs sung to weave a spell. To speak the spell backward is to unwind its enchantment. It’s my belief that the spell which unwinds all spells is the God-spell or the gospel. If I can keep hearing the music of the gospel’s enchantment, I find that I am much better at loving those around me and minding my own business. Here’s to both.
That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
This is a long story, of which I can write at great length, so I will try and keep it very brief.
1) I asked God to help me find something meaningful to remember Maunday Thursday (today 13 April 2017).
2) I’m also a writer and my wife and I are writing a book on sex and I’m currently writing a chapter titled, All love begins in the act of paying attention. So I grabbed my copy of the Great Divorce to quote the preface, from which you named your blog. Upon googling “backwards mutters,” I find myself here and doused with thanks and goosebumps. Thank you for your wonderful poem today!
