I Just Want to Say

“I just want to say, can we, can we all get along?
Can we stop making it horrible for the older people and the kids?”
Rodney King

“I just want to say, can we, can we all get along?
Can we stop making it horrible for the older people and the kids?”
Make living more than survival of the fittest and the strong;
Love mercy; act justly; not give way to what evil bids?
We wake each morning to yet another heartbreaking story
Stunned speechless, watching as loved ones cry in pain;
Crying! “Why?” Are we trapped in a meaningless purgatory?
Who will make right, requite the spilled blood of the slain?
And we cannot stay silent we must speak and shout —
We blow in blogs, we tweet, with Facebook pontificate;
We call out, challenge in outrage troll and flout;
We even pray, write poems, our indifference obliterate.
And all my brothers, beaten and broken, I just want to say
Can we, can we all get along, stop making it horrible today?

I pastor Grace Presbyterian Church in Kernersville, North Carolina which locals fondly refer to as K-vegas -- the town not the church. As D.T. Niles once said, "I am not important except to God."
