J.K. Rowling knows her Dante. In Sorcerer’s Stone, she has a three headed dog guarding the descent into the dungeon where the Sorcerer’s stone is kept. I can imagine that the filling of unlimited wealth and unending life is the answer to the gluttons devouring. In Dante’s 3rd Circle the gluttonous are mauled by the three headed dog Cerberus. The trio: Harry, Ron, and Hermione emerge victorious because of light, reason, discipline in difficulty, and self-sacrifice–all deficiencies which a gluttonous person exhibits.
