The mushy middle does seem to be going away — especially in more global settings. I think large urban areas are more decidedly secular and religious. 9-11, globalization, culture wars, are all driving the polarization of society. However, that may not be so much the case in suburban and Southern communities. There is also an apathetic element involved as well.
